Bio:   My family moved to Michigan from Albany, New York, in 1839. I was the first of their children to be born in Michigan. My father was a teacher of history at the Kalamazoo Library Institute (now Kalamazoo College). Growing up, I spent nearly all of my time in my father's study burying myself in accounts of military history, from Alexander to Napoleon. When Lincoln called for 175,000 volunteers, I decided to try my luck with a male disguise using the alias "Jonathan"- partly to escape an arranged marriage, and partly out of lust for adventure.
